Oral Cancer can affect anyone regardless of their behavior. It is caused by cells making a mistake when duplicating, which then gets copied and spread. Over time, it can cause growths, tumors, or spread to other parts of the body. It is important to diagnose it and get treatment as soon as possible.
At our dental office, we don’t want any of our patients in Covina, CA, to have to deal with this difficult disease. To better treat individuals, we have always completed oral cancer screenings with regular preventive services like exams and cleanings. The goal is to identify cancer earlier, so treatment can be initiated as soon as possible.
An oral cancer screening is a procedure where our dentist or hygienist examines the mouth and nearby tissues for cancerous or precancerous symptoms. To accomplish this, we use a variety of tools to identify irregular tissues.
The dentist screening is conducted visually and tactilely. If irregular areas are noted, Dr. Cohen will take a tissue sample and send it to a microscopic evaluation laboratory. The results are generally returned in a few days.
Anyone can be affected by oral cancer, including children. We complete dental cancer screening on all of our patients at least once a year in our office. Some people are more at risk. We recommend our patients who meet any of the following conditions come to see us at Jeffrey L. Cohen DDS as soon as possible:
